“La vie est une aventure faite de rencontres comme autant de lumiéres” –these poetic words by French designer Jean-Marie Massaud translate to “Life is an adventure made of encounters, each like a light.” Inspired by the comforting luminance and ephemeral glow of a candle-lit lantern, Massaud was moved to design the Louise Table Lamp for the lighting company Ramun, founded by Alessandro Mendini. This modern-day rechargeable, battery-powered interpretation of the classic lantern is outfitted with a light source that can be static or dynamic. The latter imitates the natural wavering of a candle flame to create cozy, intimate settings without needing to look for a match.
The Louise Table Lamp is the third edition of the 7 Stars Project conceived by Mendini, following his iconic Campanello Lamp and Marcel Wanders’ Bella Lamp. The series will end with seven table lamps, each one inspired by Mendini’s original design, which was itself inspired by the Big Dipper constellation.
“Ramun Louise Lamp is a comforting, friendly, romantic, and intimate night light,” shares Massaud. “She creates relationships: on the dining table, as a candle light, she becomes the link between people. She participates in a romantic and warm atmosphere, playing a delicate melody. At home, she’s a delicate extra or bedside lamp with a very French refinement.”
The rose gold lamp features a tubular, pleated shade made from “Stainedpla” (a pleated material that gives the lamp its delicate features), a ring at the top for easy portability, and a base (with a micro-USB port for recharging) engraved with Massaud’s French words. The power button “ignites” the lantern and adjusts the mode and brightness (up to 20 levels of illumination).
The Louise Lamp was also created under the guidance of a renowned ophthalmologist, ensuring the maximum photobiological safety of the lamp and elimination of any ultraviolet or infrared radiation. As an additional delightful feature, Louise plays 10 classical melodies by iconic composers like Georges Bizet, Johann Sebastian Bach, Frédéric Chopin, and Franz Schubert. Two additional songs, “Happy Birthday” and “Silent Night,” makes it easy to pull the Louise out for holidays, celebrations, or just cozy nights under the blankets.
