The Formation 01 Is More Water Sculpture Than Everyday Fixture

Our everyday relationship with the faucet is mostly just one of utility. We merely engage it to fulfill a relatively quick need and expect the same undramatic results when we turn it on and off. But Kohler’s latest collaboration with British artist and designer Dr. Samuel Ross, along with his industrial design studio SR_A, that perspective has been changed as a new design language for water solutions which emerges with the extraordinarily bold, limited edition Formation 01 faucet.

Launched during Design Miami 2023, the Formation 01 faucet instantly commands your attention with its sharp hue, a vibrant Haptic Orange reminiscent of “Tiger Lily” from Kohler’s 1967 bathroom line. It is cast as a singular object, very much like any sculpture made of clay, from Kohler’s exclusive Neolast material that allows for the fixture’s formal expression, shape, and rich saturation. An escutcheon plate made from Kohler’s signature cast iron acts as a base to balance the irregularity of the future-forward design.

While the faucet is no doubt spectacular in design, it needs to be emphasized that Kohler’s advanced engineering is what powers the object, if you will, maintaining its function as a water channel even with all its sharp angles. Precise pressure control and in-depth knowledge of fluid dynamics allows water to flow as its intended to be experienced by Ross’ design.
