Severe storms with hail and damaging winds threaten metro Charlotte and Upstate South Carolina Tuesday afternoon and evening, National Weather Service meteorologists said in a severe weather alert.
“Straight-line damaging winds is the primary threat,” NWS forecasters said Monday night on social media.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms emerged in the Blue Ridge Mountains around daybreak Tuesday and were expected to spread to the Piedmont by afternoon, “in an environment better suited for severe weather,” according to the alert by the NWS office in Greer, South Carolina.
Brace for storms between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., NWS meteorologists said.
“Damaging wind gusts, cloud-to-ground lightning, small hail,” according to the alert.

Skies should clear by Tuesday night and remain sunny to mostly sunny through Saturday, with highs in the mid- to upper 80s, the forecast showed.
