Plant-based pizzeria in Gainesville, sushi restaurant in Town of Tioga close

Two restaurants in Alachua County, one of which held its grand opening less than three months ago, have permanently closed.

Wild Pie, a 100% plant-based pizzeria on the ground floor of The Hub on Campus Gainesville 3rd Ave, wrote in an April 3 Facebook post that the “difficult decision” to close had been made.

“After exhausting all efforts, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Gainesville location and bring Wild Pie to an official close. Our mission was simple: serve incredible food that just happened to be plant-based — and thanks to you, we brought that vision to life. …,” the post said.

The Gainesville closure follows that of the original Jacksonville location in January. The Jacksonville-based food truck-turned-restaurant was started by Bart Ortiz.

“We’ve made the tough decision to close our Jacksonville location so we can pour all of our love and energy into Wild Pie Gainesville,” a post on Jan. 22 said. “… We’d love to personally invite you to take a quick road trip to Gainesville and experience the magic at our spot there. (We promise, it’s worth the drive!)”

West of Gainesville, the Rock N Roll Sushi that opened in the Tioga Town Center in 2021 closed on March 19, according to a note posted on the front door.

“This difficult decision was not made lightly and comes after much thoughtful consideration. Despite our best efforts to navigate the challenges of the past few years, we have been unable to sustain our operations.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and patronage over the years. Your loyalty has been invaluable to us, and we cherish the memories we have made together. …” the note said.

The note suggested that employees may have been given the opportunity to work at the other Rock N Roll Sushi located at 3205 Clark Butler Blvd., Suite 50, in the Butler North shopping plaza.

“We have made every effort to ensure a smooth transition for our employees,” the note said.
