Kansas school superintendent arrested; staff thanked for keeping students safe

In the wake of an incident Friday that landed Lyndon USD 421 Superintendent Brad Marcotte in jail, the district is thanking its staff members for ensuring no students were harmed.

The district’s Board of Education placed Marcotte on administrative leave after he was arrested last Friday afternoon on suspicion of child endangerment and obstruction, the district’s parents were told in an email that evening by Bryant Derley, president of that board.

“We want to thank our staff for acting quickly and following our safety procedures to protect students and keep them out of harm’s way,” the email said. “If you have any concerns about how the situation affects your child, please contact your child’s principal or me.”

Lyndon High School Principal Tanner Smith provided The Capital-Journal a copy of the email on Monday.

Marcotte, 53, of Scranton, was arrested by the Lyndon Police Department and booked at 4:49 p.m. Friday into the Osage County Jail in connection with one misdemeanor count each of child endangerment and obstruction, said Bret Lewis, communications director for the Osage County Sheriff’s Office.

Marcotte was then released at 6:45 p.m. Friday after a $2,500 bond was posted, Lewis said.

No further details about Friday’s incident were being made public, Lyndon Police Chief David Forkenbrock told The Capital-Journal Monday.
