City septic truck loses tank in overpass collision

The City of Lockport is seeking a repair estimate for extensive damage to a septic vacuum truck that struck the railroad overpass near the Mahle Behr USA plant on April 1.

According to New York State Police, who provided an investigation report April 10, the 2023 Peterbilt septic truck had its tank raised, resulting in a collision with the railroad trestle on Upper Mountain Road.

A passing motorist ran over debris from the collision which damaged their vehicle. The 2014 Chevrolet was towed from the scene.

The operator of the truck was taken to Lockport Memorial Hospital for evaluation of neck pain, according to the police report.

Mayor John Lombardi III said the truck was being taken to a dealership this week for a repair estimate.

Fifth Ward Alderman Margaret Lupo said the sewer truck operates like a dump truck, with a lift that raises the tank.

“It tore off the tank,” Lupo said of the collision. “They have to put a whole new tank on it. It’s a vital piece of equipment for addressing storm sewer overflows.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Kathryn Fogle, Common Council president, said damages to the truck were estimated at more than $300,000. Fogle said she believes the overpass was not damaged.

Lupo said she was not notified of the accident by city hall. Residents contacted her to ask why roads were closed in the area.

“We are managing the taxpayers’ money,” Lupo said. “They should be aware of what’s going on with it.”
