Snow days and virtual class: Central Alabama schools announce plans ahead of icy weather


Due to snow and significant temperature drops expected this week, Elmore County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 21 and 22.

“After consulting with the Elmore County EMA all Elmore County Schools will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to the wintery weather forecasted for Central Alabama,” Richard Dennis, Elmore County school superintendent, announced Sunday. “Prepare for the cold in advance, avoid travel as much as possible and stay warm.”

Montgomery Public Schools and Autauga County Schools both announced Sunday that classes will be all virtual on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 21 and 22.

“The district will be virtual on both days and all after-school activities, which include athletic events, will be canceled,” MPS announced in a release.

Autauga County announced that students are allowed to submit assignments for credit up to three days after returning to school. They anticipate a return to in-person school on Thursday, Jan. 23.

According to forecasts from AccuWeather, Monday’s high in Montgomery will be 39, with a low of 22. On Tuesday, the high will be 34, low of 20, with a chance of 1 to 3 inches of snow. Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny and cold, with a high of 42 and low of 22.

There was already no school planned for any of the school districts on Monday, due to the MLK Day holiday.

Elmore County Public Schools also announced that its regularly scheduled school board meeting for Tuesday will be moved to Thursday, Jan. 23.

“Have a great afternoon, and I hope you get to enjoy some snow!” Dennis wrote.
