HILLSDALE — The city of Hillsdale and Michigan’s Department of Transportation will co-host an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, for residents to ask questions and learn of a plan to reduce the number of lanes on Broad Street (M-99) in the historic downtown Hillsdale this summer.
The city’s planning commission has been discussing the proposal for years with intentions of reducing the roadway from four lanes to three with the center lane being a turn lane only.
“The idea behind the road diet is to slow traffic down through the downtown,” City Manager David Mackie said.
The meeting will be held at the city’s library, located at 11 East Bacon Street and public input will be considered when planning to “improve the downtown experience.”
Mackie added that there would be additional landscaping included with the proposed project. A specific start date for reconstruction has yet to be determined.

The lane reduction, if approved, would span from Steamburg Road south of the Hillsdale County Fairgrounds to Carleton Road and allow for the creation of a bike lane on either side of the roadway. Parallel parking on either side of the roadway would remain in place.
The full plans for the proposed project are listed on the city’s website, www.cityofhillsdale.org, for review prior to the Jan. 16 meeting.
