Kansas man dies, 2 others seriously injured in UTV rollover crash on Labor Day weekend

One person died and two others were seriously injured in a UTV rollover crash Sunday in central Kansas.

The driver of the UTV, Kevin Seyfert, 62, of Hoisington, died from his injuries, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday morning.

Barton County deputies responded at 6:45 p.m. to a serious UTV accident in an open field just west of Hoisington. They found a 2021 black Can-Am that had rolled over.

Seyfert and 37-year-old Kenton Renz were thrown out of the UTV. Lavern Boxberger, 71, was wearing a seat belt and remained in the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Seyfert was taken to Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington and then flown to Wichita. He died from his injuries on Monday. Renz and Boxberger were flown to Wichita-area hospitals with serious injuries, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

All three were from Hoisington.

Seyfert was driving the Can-Am at a high rate of speed when he tried to make a sharp turn, according to the news release. The UTV skidded and overturned.

“The Sheriff’s Office has not ruled out the possibility that alcohol was a contributing factor. The accident is still under investigation.” the news release said.

Hoisington is a city of just under 2,650 people roughly a two-hour drive northwest of Wichita.
